This link will take you to the NIOSH reports for February 29th.

Wow! An “extra” day! Every four years we are provided an extra day on the calendar. But, in life, it is just another day. We all go about our lives, most without giving our time another thought. But, if you knew that your time was limited, I bet you would try and make the most of it!

None of us know how much time we have left on this earth. We all need to do better to make the most of it by living a good life, being kind to one another, taking care of our families, friends and loved ones. In order to do this, we need to be healthy in both body and mind.

Please get an annual medical physical and provide your physician the guide available from the International Association of Fire Chiefs so she or he will be better informed about the health risks for firefighters.

Also, please be mindful of your mental health. This job is hard and we see a lot of terrible things that we can’t unsee! This job changes us. Most of the time for the better, but very often for the worse. We need to stay mentally healthy for our families, friends and coworkers. I don’t know anything about this company other than they have a good page about firefighter mental health that contains links to 5 of the top resources to get some assistance.

But, I do know about Travis Howze. Travis is a Marine Corps veteran, former police officer, retired firefighter, best selling author and an excellant motivational speaker. If you have not been to one of his Post Traumatic Purpose Events, please seek one out and attend with your significant other, even if it means some travel and an overnight stay. And, if you have not read his book, Create Your Own Light, get a copy and I’m willing to bet you will enjoy it as well as be moved by it!

Please enjoy this “extra” day and stay healthy so you can make every day an “extra” day by making the most of each and every one!
